Folding knife or a fixed-blade knife?

It all begins with an idea.

I am Chen Banks, the owner of Out There Edge Knives and Sharpening Service. I started making knives as a hobby back in 2012 and it turned into a dream of having this business. As a child, I always had a fascination with knives and swords. I grew up watching movies like Conan the Barbarian and Rambo, or should I say, sneaking to watch while my parents were gone. A solid fixed blade or a strong sword has always been my preference. I have owned several fixed-blade and folding knives over the years.

Fixed-blade knives are strong and usually don’t come apart unless they are abused. Folding knives, even the expensive ones, always seem to come apart eventually. Screws loosen, pocket clips loosen, springs break, and they are easier to misplace. The good thing about pocket knives is that they fit right into your pocket, hence the name and they are usually lightweight and less cumbersome to carry.

If I know the knife In need is something I will depend on for work or personal safety, I will always choose a fixed-blade knife. I don’t want this knife breaking or loosening screws in the middle of something important such as defending myself. In that situation, I want something solid I can pull out that won’t let me down. I also don’t want a large knife strapped to my belt every day either. The best option is to have both and make a judgment call on which one to bring depending on where I’m going and doing that day. When buying a folding knife, you should also buy a micro screwdriver set to retighten screws when needed. A good place to find folding knives is Smokey Mountain Knife Works You can also purchase a small fixed-blade knife that won’t be a pain to carry if you prefer this option. This is a gun age, but there have been more times I have needed a knife than I have ever needed my gun.

This is just my opinion on fixed-blade knives vs folding, so I say fixed-blade all the way! Please contact Out There Edge Knives and Sharpening Service if you want to have your very own fixed-blade knife created. Your knife idea will be sketched and used as a template. Choose your handle material and your knife will be created. Call Chen Banks at 919-673-1901 for more information on custom knife orders.
